Where to park mobility scooters in Amsterdam and the Netherlands

The mobility scooter in the Netherlands belongs to the category of vehicles for people with disabilities and is subject to specific parking rules that differ from those of other vehicles (RVV 1990). The highway code first of all specifies that the scooter is a vehicle not equipped with an engine, or equipped with an engine whose maximum speed does not exceed 45 KM per hour. The legislation also establishes the maximum dimensions: 1.1 m wide - 2 m high - 3.5 m long. No parking card for disabled travelers is required to park it.

WHERE YOU CAN PARK A MOBILITY SCOOTER:

- Sidewalk:

the mobility scooter can be parked on the sidewalk but others must be able to pass it without difficulty. Please note that other people may also be using another mobility scooter, wheelchair, pushchair, or other mobility aid.

- Residential area:

often provided that you do not park for more than 3 hours;

- No parking:

as a mobility scooter driver you can park in places where there is a "no parking" but for a maximum of 3 hours;

- Area with a yellow dotted line:

in the car park with the yellow lines at times you can park the scooter for a maximum of 3 hours.

WHERE YOU CAN NOT PARK A MOBILITY SCOOTER:

As with other means of transport legally recognized by the code (bicycles, cars, buses, mopeds), Dutch law establishes where parking is not allowed. Here you can find an overview of prohibited places:

- within 5 meters of a road intersection;

- near an entrance or an exit;

- in a loading and unloading aisle;

- in double lane;

- in parking lots where: the vehicle does not correspond to that indicated by the road sign; there is a sign indicating a different purpose; different times and days are specified; car parks with a solid yellow line.

PARKING RESERVED TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY:

In the Netherlands, parking spaces reserved for travelers with disabilities have the classic blue sign with the letter P symbol in white and the wheelchair symbol. These car parks are intended for vehicles with more than two wheels, on which a parking card for disabled travelers is highlighted. Moreover, if you decide to park your vehicle here (car or minivan) remember to check that the place is not already assigned to someone (with a sign with a license plate).
