At No. 386 Herengracht is one of the most interesting and elegant museums in all of Amsterdam, the Canal Museum (Grachtenmuseum in Dutch). It was opened to the public in 2011, one year after the inclusion of the Amsterdammer canal belt on the UNESCO heritage list. A visit to its collection will give you an immersive experience that, through the centuries, tells the story of the canal system that made the Dutch capital world-famous. Here in the permanent exhibition section there are five rooms exploring the last four centuries of the city. At the entrance you can pick up an audio guide, offered in 9 languages, which will take you through the tour for about 50 minutes. Contributing to the beauty of the visit is the museum setting: a charming seventeenth-century mansion built around 1663 to the design of P. Vingboons and thanks to the private patronage of K. Gerards. In 1970 this elegant building was declared a National Monument.

• Opening hours: Mondays from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last admission at 4:30 p.m.

• Closed: December 25, January 1, and April 27.

• Ticket price: Euro 16.50 euros for adults, Euro 9.50 for children ages 6 to 17, free for children under 5.

• Entrance: there is a stair-elevator outside the museum that leads to the accessible entrance of the museum.

• Parking: a parking lot reserved for visitors with disabilities is located right in front of the museum. Note that it is not possible to reserve a spot. The parking lot has the bike path on one side and a narrow space before the canal on the other. There are no yellow-striped stalls on either side.

• Accessibility: good museum accessibility, all rooms can be visited with a wheelchair, but there is only one narrow entrance 80 cm wide. Also several codes to scan for audiotour are located too high.

• Elevator: there is an elevator inside that is accessible using a wheelchair.

• Audioguide: audioguide in several languages present. Some codes to scan are too high. Languages available: Dutch, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese (Mandarin), and Russian.

• Guide dog: accepted.

• Toilet: accessible toilet with grab bars accessible to visitors with wheelchairs.

• Chaperone: if you cannot visit the museum on your own, you may bring 1 chaperone for free.

• Hearing impairment: a hard copy with a description of the museum can be requested at the museum's cash desk.

• Rental: small folding stools can be rented.

• Mobility scooters: not accepted.
