History of the Binnenhof
The Binnenhof is a complex of buildings built near the pond called Hofvijver. Where the Binnenhof stands today, there was once a swamp, a landscape then characteristic of much of the Netherlands. In the first half of the 1200s, Fiorenzo IV of the Netherlands purchased the area, which featured a keep, to innanlze a residence . It was his son William II of Holland who further developed the architecture, having the castle enclosed by walls and a moat, and then enclosing the surrounding areas as well. In the 13th century, the "Knights' Hall "and the "Court Chapel" were built in the Gothic style. Historians think that the castle was completed during the reign of William II's son, Fiorenzo V of Holland. The various counts of Holland who succeeded each other over the decades found their residence here, although they actually resided there.
Iconic Architecture
The complex is characterized by buildings that date back to different periods, showing an architectural style that varies from Gothic to Neoclassical. The Rutte Tower, one of the oldest parts, and the Hofvijver, a surrounding artificial lake, add a scenic dimension to the whole environment.
