National Holocaust Names Memorial in Amsterdam - accessibility
As of September 20, 2021, the National Holocaust Names Memorial in the heart of Amsterdam's former Jewish Quarter opened to the public. Its design, designed by Studio Libeskind and built by Rijnboutt Architects, features a composition of four sections representing the Hebrew word "lizachàr" ("in memoriam"). On the walls of the sections are 102,000 red bricks placed in alphabetical order, engraved with the name, date of birth and death of each victim. Of particular interest is a single wall in which 1,000 unnamed bricks are placed, commemorating the unnamed victims and accommodating additional names. Finally, above each wall are inossibles steel and mirrored glass structures that reflect the environment. It is a touching tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and the Porajmos, and at the same time a warning to future generations. Walking here is like walking through history, creating a tangible connection with the victims. The experience of visiting this place is powerful.
