Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam - Accessibility
The Rijksmuseum collection, the largest of all the Netherlands, is housed in a historic Gothic-Renaissance building in the heart of Amsterdam. It is the Dutch National Museum which annually hosts an incredible number of visitors among its galleries: in 2019 there were 2.7 million visits. In its rooms and galleries you will find absolute masterpieces that can give you an extensive overview of the history of Dutch art. You will be able to see the first medieval altarpieces up to modern works, passing through the Dutch 17th century masterpieces. It is here that you can admire works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and Steen. The famous Night Watch is located right here.
The Rijksmuseum is one of the most accessible museums in all of Amsterdam. The accessibility of the Rijksmuseum is really good. For visitors with disabilities, a priority entrance service is offered, so that waiting times can be reduced to a minimum.
Here are some of its accessibility services:
- Parking: parking spaces for the disabled on the streets near the museum (2 in Johannes Vermeerstraat and 4 Jan Luijkenstraat) or at the Q-Park MuseumPlein car park (2).
- Accompanying persons: free entry for any accompanying persons.
- Entrance: the museum has 2 entrance and they are located in The Passage, the arcade under the building. The accessible one, with a lift, is located on the left side when arriving from Museumplein.
- Exhibition rooms: accessible to wheelchair users.
- Rental: possibility of renting wheelchairs, guide rods, rollators or folding chairs (contact in advance).
- Lifts: suitable for wheelchair transport.
- Loop system: a loop system has been installed in the museum auditorium.
- Sign language: sign language tours are offered (English and Dutch).
- Visual disabilities: guided programs for people with visual disabilities.
- Toilets: accessible toilets with support handles.
- Guide dogs: accepted if they wear a suitable harness.
- Autism: the museum offers a preparatory document, downloadable here.
- Cafeteria: present.
- Scooters for mobility: they are accepted, preferably in the less crowded hours.
